There's something special about wearing a vintage-inspired dress on your wedding day. It stands apart from the mainstream, it tells a story, and if it's made properly, it fits like nothing else you've ever worn. If you're drawn to the idea of a vintage wedding dress — whether that's an original piece, a vintage-inspired design, or something completely bespoke — here's what to think about.

Original Vintage vs Bespoke

The first decision is whether you want an actual vintage dress or something newly made in a vintage style. Both have their appeal.

An original dress carries real history — the fabric, the construction, the details are all authentic. The challenge is finding one in the right size, condition, and style. Vintage sizing runs differently to modern sizing, and alterations can be tricky depending on the fabric and construction.

A bespoke vintage-inspired dress gives you complete control. You choose the era, the silhouette, the fabric, and the fit is made to your exact measurements. At TEA, most of our brides go the bespoke route because they want a specific look that they can't find off the rack.

Choosing Your Era

The decade you're drawn to will shape the whole outfit. Here's a quick guide:

1950s — full skirts, nipped-in waists, tea-length hems. Think Grace Kelly elegance. Structured bodices with layers of tulle or taffeta underneath.

1960s — clean lines, shift dresses, above-the-knee hems. The mod bride. Simple, striking, and completely different from the traditional meringue. This is our most popular era for bespoke bridal work.

1970s — flowing sleeves, empire lines, bohemian details. More relaxed and romantic. Lovely for outdoor or festival-style weddings.

The Fabric Makes the Dress

Fabric choice is everything in a vintage-style wedding dress. We use sustainably sourced vintage fabrics wherever possible — original 60s brocades, lace, chiffon and crepe give an authenticity that modern reproductions can't quite match.

For a 60s mod wedding dress, a structured fabric like dupion silk or heavy crepe holds the clean A-line shape beautifully. For something softer, chiffon overlays or lace detailing add movement without losing the simplicity.

Accessories and the Full Look

A vintage wedding outfit isn't just the dress. Think about the full picture — a simple veil or headpiece, vintage-style shoes, a structured clutch or small handbag, and jewellery that complements without competing.

For a 60s-inspired look, less is more. A pair of statement earrings, simple shoes, and clean hair — maybe a cropped bob or a low chignon — keeps the focus on the dress.

How We Work

Every bespoke bridal commission at TEA starts with a personal consultation. We talk through what you're imagining, look at fabrics, and work together to design something that's completely yours. Fittings are done in person, and we take the time to get every detail right.

We've had brides travel from all over the UK and beyond for their consultations, and many of them have become friends long after the big day. There's something about creating a one-off piece for someone's wedding that never gets old.

If you're thinking about a vintage wedding dress, we'd love to hear from you. Get in touch through our contact page or browse our wedding collection for inspiration.
