The 1960s mod look is one of the most recognisable styles in fashion history — clean lines, bold prints, sharp tailoring and a confidence that still turns heads today. Whether you're dressing for a scooter rally, a themed event, or you just love the aesthetic, here's how to put together an authentic mod outfit that actually works.

Start with the Silhouette

The foundation of any mod outfit is the shape. For women, that means A-line shift dresses that sit above the knee, fitted skirt suits with neat hems, or a sharp pair of straight-leg trousers with a boxy top. The key is clean, geometric lines — nothing fussy or over-embellished.

For men, it's all about the polo shirt, a slim-fit knit, or a neat button-down collar shirt. Pair with slim trousers and you've got the basics right. The mod look was always about looking put-together without trying too hard.

Choose Your Fabrics

One of the easiest ways to get an authentic feel is through the fabric. Crimplene, nylon and wool were the workhorses of 1960s fashion. If you've never handled a piece of original crimplene, you'll be surprised at how well it holds its shape after decades — there's a reason so many vintage pieces survive in excellent condition.

For a lighter look, nylon blouses and lace tops in brilliant white give that crisp, fresh 60s feel. For winter, a heavyweight wool coat with oversized collar and bold pattern is about as mod as it gets.

Get the Colour Right

Early 60s mod fashion leaned on monochrome — black and white op-art patterns, houndstooth checks, and graphic stripes. As the decade progressed, colour exploded: mustard yellow, burnt orange, olive green, teal and deep burgundy became staples.

The trick is to keep it bold but not busy. One statement piece — a patterned dress, a colour-block coat — and let the rest of the outfit support it with solid colours.

Accessories Make the Look

For women, think chunky plastic jewellery, clip-on earrings, structured handbags and low-heeled court shoes. A pair of vintage clip-on earrings in a bright colour can transform a plain outfit.

For men, it's all about the details — a good pair of desert boots or loafers, a slim leather belt, and if the weather calls for it, a classic parka or Harrington jacket over the top.

Where to Find Authentic Pieces

The beauty of mod fashion is that original pieces from the 1960s and 70s are still out there and still wearable. At Teri England Attire, we hand-select every piece for quality, condition and authentic style. Whether you're after an original crimplene shift dress, a sharp men's polo top, or a one-off handmade commission, we've been doing this since 2006.
